Qualification Description
HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

This unit is designed to provide the skills and knowledge required to perform first aid for infants and children. It includes additional training in asthma and anaphylaxis management specific to the childcare industry and other child-focused organizations, as well as parents and carers of young children.

On successful completion of this course, participants will learn:

  • Responding to emergency situations (e.g., choking, bleeding, fractures, sprains)
  • Managing shock
  • Identifying hazards and risks
  • Infection control
  • Managing acute illnesses in children and infants
  • First aid procedures
  • How to perform CPR on adults, children, and infants
  • Usage of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
  • First aid principles
  • Anaphylaxis risk management
  • Asthma risk management
  • Caring for a casualty and monitoring their condition
  • First aid resources
  • Administering medication
  • Understanding duty of care
  • Reporting and communicating incident details
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Psychological First Aid (PFA)
  • Stress management techniques and support

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) procedures are based on ARC (Australian Resuscitation Council) guidelines. This unit is required for workers and volunteers in education and care settings, including preschools, childcare centers, schools, OOSH centers, and other child-focused organizations such as youth groups and social activities.

The course is delivered by a qualified industry-skilled trainer at our Western Sydney Skills Hub, 410 Church St, Level 3, Suite 34, North Parramatta

Prerequisites

Whilst there are no prerequisites for this course, it is expected that you have adequate language, literacy, and numeracy skills, and computer skills to interact with peers and trainers and complete the theory assessment online via MOODLE. You will also need to be physically fit enough to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on the floor.

Delivery Strategies

The practical component of this course is delivered face-to-face in a classroom environment with a qualified and skilled trainer. The theory must be completed online via MOODLE prior to the practical class. Learning strategies include role play, demonstrations, lectures, and classroom activities. The practical class is 5 hours long.

Assessment Strategies

The assessments involve various activities, including knowledge questions, performance demonstrations, and observations. All participants will be supported by our qualified and skilled team throughout their learning journey.

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled class, as late arrivals will not be admitted.

Cost

Fee for service: $119.00

Competency Outcome

On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment quoting the relevant unit of competency listed above.
